The BMW name appears in the championship in 1952 and 1953, when privately built, BMW-engined cars were entered for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. They were driven by Krause, Klodwig, Balsa and Bechem rather than by a works team, and the entries started 2 Grand Prix. The best result was twelfth place at the 1952 German Grand Prix. BMW itself returned to Formula 1 much later as an engine supplier and, from 2006, as the owner of the BMW Sauber team.
