Raymond Sommer was a French driver and a leading privateer of the immediate post-war years. He drove Ferrari and Talbot-Lago cars in the inaugural 1950 Formula 1 World Championship season, finishing fourth at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix, his best result, and scoring three points in 5 Grands Prix. He had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1932 and 1933. Sommer was killed in 1950 in a crash at a race in Cadours, France.
