Rial was a German constructor founded by Gunter Schmid, the former owner of the ATS team. It raced in Formula 1 in 1988 and 1989, with cars designed by Gustav Brunner, and Andrea de Cesaris took fourth place at the 1988 Detroit Grand Prix, its best result. Rial started 21 Grands Prix and scored six championship points before it withdrew after 1989.
