Competing in 206 races, he demonstrated a cerebral and meticulous approach to racing, often excelling in qualifying to secure 30 pole positions. His career culminated in a fierce rivalry with Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, which he ultimately won to claim the 2016 World Championship before immediately announcing his retirement.
